Linkrot Open Beta

FAQ

What is the maximum size of an image?

Currently 32 megabytes.

What image formats are supported?

Currently JPG, PNG, non-animated GIF, webp, or AVIF. HEIC ison the to-do list.

Videos?

Probably someday.

Arbitrary data files?

Probably not. Enforcing the terms of service becomes nearly impossible in that case.

You transcoded my image to a lossy format! Can I store a lossless image?

Maybe someday, if you're good.

Can you search images or view recently uploaded images?

No. This is not a community, it is a tool for sharing with communities. This may change someday, but for now it keeps costs low and functionality high.

Can you mark images as private?

No. Anyone with an image's URL can view it. However, there is no way to find a particular image's URL other than trial and error, and there is no way to see the original uploader of an image. Images are never private, but are always secret. Share wisely.

Can I delete an image I uploaded?

No, just don't pay for it and wait for it to time out. However, anyone with a link to it can put money in and "resurrect" it. Again, share wisely.

How long can I store an image for?

As long as the service lasts and someone keeps paying for the image. Ideally we never delete anything, just make it unavailable.

However, since the costs of serving the images changes over time, if you want to pay for an image for 100 years we cannot realistically say that the price you paid for it has anything to do with reality. So we only guarantee the duration of an image up to 1 year in the future. Past that, any money put into the image is placed into a buffer and will automatically pay out to extend the image's life once per month, at whatever that month's price happens to be.
